The National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH) is a statistical production project that provides information on household budgets, specifically on the distribution, level, and structure of income and expenditure. It enables the updating of the basket and weights of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), supplies information on consumption patterns for the development of the Basic Food Basket (BFB) used in poverty measurement, and generates statistics for estimating the contribution of households to national production.
ENIGH also facilitates the collection of information for a range of other studies related to living conditions, inequality, apparent food intake, catastrophic health expenditure, and the selection of the Basic Tax Basket (BTB), among others. These studies are used to guide economic, social, and health policies.
Household income and expenditure surveys have the longest historical trajectory in Costa Rica. Their implementation is currently established under Law No. 9694 of the National Statistical System. Their quinquennial production is recommended by the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD) and other international organizations to adjust the underlying statistical information of the country’s main macroeconomic indicators.
